Legal and Human Rights
Being a Canadian citizen means that you have certain rights. Rights are rules that help make sure everyone gets treated fairly and with respect. In Canada, some of these rights have been written into a law called the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. As a person with a disability you are a citizen, just like many other people living in Canada. But sometimes you may be forgotten and get left out of the mainstream of society your society or community. That is why it is important to remember that you have rights. These rights say that just because you have a disability that doesn't mean that you can be treated poorly. Rights are there to help protect you from being denied by making sure that you don't miss out on the chance of getting a good education, educational opportunities having a job and a home, and having a reliable way to get around, transportation you can use, and from being isolated because of physical and social barriers. They can also protect you from feeling alone because you don't feel welcome or because you can't physically get into the places you want to go to. Below are links to get some more information about what your rights are and how you can use them.
